Minimum requirements
Akonga must be at least 16 years of age (unless an exemption from attending school has been granted) at the commencement of the programme. An exemption from attending school may be granted by a person designated under sections 21 or 26 of the Education Act 1989, by a school principal from a school in which the prospective akonga is registered, or by the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Education. Akonga must be New Zealand citizens (or citizens of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands) or permanent residents. Akonga must not exceed Study Load requirements. Akonga may only enrol in more than one TWoA programme concurrently if Te Rautiaki Matauranga approves the dual programme options. Akonga can be enrolled in an additional part-time programme if the academic workload has been considered achievable. Akonga must meet the following programme-specific requirements: Have successfully completed Te Haputanga o te Reo (Kaupae 5), or a te reo Maori diploma qualification at Level 5, or Year One of a te reo Maori degree (Rumaki), and Attend an interview, or information hui, with a kaiako OR Successfully complete the pre-entry assessment (PEA) Direct entries only, and Attend an interview, or information hui, with a kaiako. A Pre-entry Assessment is used as a diagnostic tool that allows: the applicant to demonstrate their level of preparedness to engage with, and to successfully complete, the programme of learning they are applying for entry to. the kaiako to gauge the level of the applicant s preparedness and to identify any areas that may require additional or specific support to progress the applicant through to successful completion of the programme. the kaiako to identify and propose a more appropriate programme of study, and for the ethical enrolment of applicants into appropriate levels of study. This programme does require Direct Entry applicants only to complete a PEA. This programme is not subject to Police Vetting requireme
