What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the conservation and recreation sectors with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to carry out operational conservation work under broad guidance.
This is an entry level qualification designed for people already working in conservation, or those who intend to enter operational or field-work roles in the conservation sector.
Aotearoa/New Zealand will benefit from having operational staff who are able to contribute to sustainable stewardship of the environment through the application of technical skills and knowledge, and honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Academic: Applicants under 20 years old Achieved NCEA Level 2 - (credits in Numeracy, Science or English desirable). Applicants 20 years or over No minimum academic requirements. English Language: All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall Academic score of at least 5.5 issued within the last two years (or equivalent). Other: - First Aid in the Outdoor Certificate (covering unit standards 6400, 6401, 6402 and 424) - Curriculum Vitae - Selected applicants will be required to attend an interview/hui (see section 4.2 below) Applicants must hold New Zealand or Australian citizenship/permanent residency due to Department of Conservation and NZ Council workplace constraints around offering employment to international citizens. Recommendation: Full, manual driver license Special Entry: In exceptional circumstances, an applicant under the age of 20 years who does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the programme at the discretion of the selection panel and Curriculum Manager.
