About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills necessary to take charge of, and maintain, the safety of vessels of less than 24 metres in length operating within restricted limits under the Maritime NZ Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.
The qualification is for people working as deck crew or people with suitable experience as a skipper on a recreational vessel intending to progress to the role of skipper on a restricted limits vessel.

Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
"To be admitted to this programme, applicants must hold one of the following: 40 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above, including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits, or, [2895] New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Crewing (Level 3), or a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 3, or a recognised equivalent. It is recommended that the applicants be employed or engaged in the Maritime industry. Special and discretionary admission is available. International applicants are required to have an IELTS (General or Academic / Academic)score of 5.5 with no individual band lower than 5 from a single test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules."
