What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification is intended for whānau, hapū, iwi and hapori with an interest or some theoretical knowledge and operational experience in Mahinga Kai (Māori food production, harvesting, and management) who are seeking a formal qualification to work toward cultural confidence with limited supervision at an introductory level.
The purpose of the qualification is to validate and enhance learners' knowledge, understanding, and skills in Mahinga Kai, with a view to preserving, enhancing, and promoting this body of knowledge for current and future generations. Te iwi Māori and Aotearoa will benefit from having graduates who have, from a te ao Māori perspective, an appreciation for mātauranga Mahinga Kai, and are able to apply those skills and knowledge.
Graduates will be able to work with whānau, hapū, iwi, and hapori demonstrating and applying mātauranga Mahinga Kai as a unique body of knowledge to enhance connection to ao Māori.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Age: Must be 18 years of age and over on the date the programme of study commences. Academic: Must be at least equivalent to NCEA L2 literacy - i.e. Koru Step 4 on the LNAATs measure. Physical: No specific criteria Language: Tauira whose first language is not English must provide evidence of functional, daily living, general literacy. All tuition is conducted in English. Delivery will integrate an introduction to relevant reo Maori. Citizenship: Must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. Interview: Applicants will be required to be interviewed by the kaiako. Applicants must be able to demonstrate an interest in food production. Applicants must be able to articulate their ideas regarding what the programme involves and how they will benefit by participating in this programme, and the possibility of contributing to change for their whanau and wider iwi. Applicants must also have a definite interest in tikanga Maori. Attendance: Must be able to attend for the planned kaiako-tutored time. Kokiri applies the Maori principle of ako which is fundamental to the Maori way of learning and involves new knowledge and understanding growing out of shared experiences.
